The price of electricity has not been increased for consumers using up to 75 units per month, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku has said. He said the government took this decision considering the financial capacity of the marginalised population.

Speaking at an event on Friday, July 17, at the newly constructed administrative building of Sirajganj Sadar upazila, the minister said most families in rural areas do not use more than 75 units per month. The government carefully considered ensuring that low-income people do not face additional pressure from higher bills.

He said the government is working to build a welfare state, implementing social safety net programmes including family cards.

On the energy sector plan, the minister said the government has set a target of generating 10,000 MW of solar power. This environment-friendly power does not require fuel, which will reduce dependence on imports and save foreign currency.

Regarding the ongoing student protests, the minister said, "We all passed exams. Preventing cheating or irregularities in exam halls cannot be a valid reason for protests."
