Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has said that the proportional representation (PR) system can only be implemented if the law is amended; otherwise, it is not possible.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Rajshahi region election officials at the Regional Public Administration Training Center on Saturday (August 23).

"The PR system is not included in the Constitution, and the Election Commission cannot act beyond legal provisions," he said.

Nasir Uddin emphasized that election preparations are progressing, including updating voter lists, procuring materials, and finalising electoral boundaries. Public hearings on constituency boundaries will begin next Sunday and continue until Thursday.

The CEC also said the army will be included under law enforcement for election security, and strict measures will be taken against attempts to occupy polling stations, which could lead to cancellation of votes in affected areas.

He clarified that officers who committed irregularities in previous elections will not be retained, while experienced officials will continue to serve. He added that the government has not pressured the EC, and he would resign if any undue influence were applied.

Regarding political parties, Nasir Uddin noted that the Awami League is under trial and will be unable to participate in elections until the legal process is complete.
