Pregnant woman and daughter found hanging from ceiling fan in Sylhet

Police recovered the hanging bodies of a pregnant woman and her four-year-old daughter from their home in Zakiganj in Sylhet.

The incident took place on Saturday evening in Dashpara of Burhanpur village under Barhal Union in the upazila. Zakiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Abdur Razzaq confirmed the incident.

The deceased were identified as Champa Rani Das, 35, wife of Ratan Das, a jewellery trader at Dash Shahgoli Bazar in the upazila, and her four-year-old daughter, Hridi Das.

Police said they would investigate the scene and send the bodies for post-mortem examinations. The actual cause of death will be determined based on the post-mortem reports and findings from the investigation, after which further legal action will be taken.

Local Union Parishad Chairman Mostak Ahmad Chowdhury told journalists that Champa Rani and her daughter were found hanging from the same ceiling fan in their room in the evening. After news of the incident spread, local residents rushed to the scene.

“The incident is extremely tragic. We have learned that the woman was pregnant. It is not yet known what prompted her to take such a step,” he added.
