Pregnant woman dies in Kurigram, family alleges medical negligence at private clinic
A pregnant woman died while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital after her family alleged medical negligence and improper treatment at a private clinic in Kurigram’s Ulipur upazila, triggering anger in the local community.
The deceased, identified as Nurani Begum, 35, was a resident of Khamardamarhat area under Bozra union and mother of one child.
According to family members, Nurani was admitted to “Ulipur Adhunik Diagnostic Center and Hospital” after experiencing labour pain. Doctors there later decided to perform a caesarean section.
Relatives alleged that complications arose during the surgery due to negligence and incorrect treatment, causing severe damage to her uterus and excessive bleeding. As her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital late at night, where she died Thursday morning while undergoing treatment.
The victim’s family further claimed that clinic authorities initially attempted to conceal the severity of her condition before finally referring her to Rangpur after midnight.
Family members have accused attending physicians Dr. Ata Elahi Sohag and Dr. Nazrul Islam of medical negligence.
Nur Alam, a nephew of the deceased, said a gynecology specialist had initially advised against immediate surgery because of the patient’s high blood pressure, but the clinic allegedly proceeded with the operation anyway on Wednesday night.
However, operating physician Dr. Ata Elahi Sohag denied the allegations, saying the patient’s uterus had already ruptured before surgery and that severe swelling and bleeding complicated the situation. He also claimed the family failed to arrange blood in time, forcing doctors to refer her to Rangpur for advanced treatment.
Kurigram Civil Surgeon Dr. Swapan Kumar Biswas said authorities are aware of the allegations and an investigation will be conducted before taking further action.
