Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will visit the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar on Saturday morning (August 22) to pay tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War, shortly after taking office.

The president is scheduled to arrive at the memorial at 10:15am and place a wreath at the altar dedicated to the war heroes, according to the Bangabhaban Press Wing.

He will then observe a moment of silence in memory of the martyrs. A smartly turned-out contingent comprising members of the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force will present him with a guard of honour, while a bugle will play a solemn tune.

Fakhrul will also sign the visitors' book before leaving the memorial.

Extensive preparations have been made at the National Martyrs' Memorial ahead of the presidential visit. The Public Works Department has completed arrangements across the premises, while security has been tightened in and around the memorial area.

Fakhrul took the oath of office as president at Bangabhaban on Friday evening, with Acting Speaker Kaisar Kamal administering the oath.

He was elected the country's 23rd president on Thursday after securing 255 votes from members of parliament. He contested the election as the BNP-nominated candidate.
