President to administer oath to cabinet members tomorrow
President Md Sahabuddin will administer the oath to members of the new cabinet at the South Plaza of the National Parliament building tomorrow, Tuesday, February 17, in the afternoon.
National Parliament Secretariat Secretary Kaniz Moula informed that the oath-taking ceremony will be held at 4 pm. Earlier in the morning, the oath-taking for newly elected members of parliament will take place.
She further informed that the Cabinet Division and Parliament Secretariat began preparations for the oath ceremony from Saturday, two days after the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
Breaking from long-standing tradition, the new government's oath-taking ceremony is being organised at the South Plaza of the National Parliament instead of Bangabhaban this time. Bangabhaban sources said the Cabinet Secretary will conduct the ceremony.
According to rules, after the oath-taking of newly elected MPs, the parliamentary board meeting of the majority-winning Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will be held. The party leader will be elected there. Subsequently, the elected leader will meet the President and apply for appointment as Prime Minister, informing him of the party's absolute majority in parliament.
The President will appoint the parliamentary party leader as Prime Minister. The Prime Minister will subsequently select the members of the cabinet. As head of state, Md Sahabuddin will first administer the oath to the Prime Minister, and later to ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers.
According to the constitution, elected members must take oath within three days of gazette publication.
On Friday night, the Election Commission published the gazette for 297 out of 299 seats in the 13th National Parliamentary Election. In this election, BNP led by Tarique Rahman secured an absolute majority by winning 209 seats.
On the other hand, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will play the role of main opposition party with 68 seats. Other parties and independent candidates have won the remaining seats.
