Press Secretary condemns harassment of NCP Leader Akhtar in NY
Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has condemned the recent egg-throwing incident targeting Akhtar Hossain, leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP), during a visit to New York with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
The incident occurred at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday, September 22, when members of the U.S. branch of the Bangladesh Awami League, a banned organization in Bangladesh, reportedly threw eggs at Akhtar Hossain as he was leaving the airport.
Speaking to journalists at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan later that evening, Shafiqul Alam described the attack as “undesirable” and said the Bangladeshi consulate and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would investigate the matter.
During the briefing, the press secretary also outlined Chief Adviser Yunus’s schedule, including his participation in an IMF meeting on social business at the United Nations, and meetings with the U.S. Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor.
The assault on NCP leaders accompanying Professor Yunus highlights ongoing political tensions amid the delegation’s visit.
