Press Secretary rules out politics, plans to return to journalism
Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser of the interim government, has announced that he will not join any political party after the conclusion of the interim government’s tenure. Instead, he intends to return fully to journalism and writing.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Shafiqul Alam addressed rumors about his possible entry into politics. “Some friends have said that I am going to join a major or newly formed political party. To be clear, I have no interest in any political party,” he wrote. “I have no desire to lead the kind of life an MP or political ‘big shot’ leads.”
He compared Bangladesh’s political scene with that of countries like Singapore and European nations, saying, “Political leaders there enjoy good financial benefits, but in our country, being well-off in politics often means corruption. I do not want to take that path.”
Shafiqul Alam also shared his plans to focus on writing after his current duties end. “I plan to write several books and could dedicate my life to documenting the July Uprising,” he said. “I have never seen such a bold and widespread political movement.”
Addressing recent security concerns, he revealed that he has received threats from some Awami League activists in recent months, which he attributed to their frustration over declining popularity.
He concluded with a message of faith, saying, “I have full trust in Almighty Allah, who created us and to whom we will return. I am looking forward to the next chapter of my life.”
