The elected government will uphold the previous administration's decision regarding tourism restrictions on Saint Martin's Island. The island will remain open to tourists only for the specified period to protect the environment, surroundings, and biodiversity.

According to the government, allowing tourism for more than three months a year could threaten the existence of Saint Martin's Island.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintu shared this information in a written statement to Deutsche Welle. He said scientific field research showed that keeping tourism suspended for nine months annually has led to significant improvement in the island's environment and biodiversity.

The minister said the final decision to regulate tourism on Saint Martin's Island was made in 2024 following discussions and consultations with relevant organisations over nearly seven years.

Under the interim government's decision, a nine-month ban on tourist entry to the island remains in effect.

The minister emphasised the necessity of continuing this decision, stating: "If tourism is allowed for more than three months, the existence of Saint Martin's Island will be endangered."

Describing Saint Martin's as the country's only coral island in the open sea and a vital natural heritage, the minister said the restrictions on tourism are essential to protect its environment and biodiversity.

The prolonged suspension of tourism has allowed the island to recover naturally, helping maintain its ecological balance, he added.
