The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at the consumer level has been reduced. The price of a 12 kg cylinder has been fixed at 1,450 taka in the current March. Last month, the price was 28 taka higher than this time.

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Chairman Jalal Ahmed announced the new price at a press conference at the agency's office on Monday. It was informed that the new price will be effective from 6 pm on Monday.

The agency fixes the price of LPG every month. However, there are allegations that LPG is not sold at the fixed price in the market. The 12 kg cylinder of LPG is most commonly used for household purposes.

According to the new price of BERC, the price of private LPG including value added tax (VAT) has been fixed at 120 taka 81 paisa per kg, which was 123 taka 16 paisa last month. The price of LPG cylinders of different sizes is determined on this basis.

The price of a 12.5 kg cylinder of LPG supplied by government companies has been kept unchanged at 690 taka. And the new price of LPG (auto gas) used in cars has been fixed at 66 taka 43 paisa per liter, which was earlier 67 taka 74 paisa.

BERC has been determining the price of LPG since April 2021. Propane and butane, the main ingredients of LPG, are imported from different countries.

Saudi Arabian company Aramco publishes the price of these two ingredients of LPG every month. This is known as the Saudi Cargo Price (CP). BERC adjusts the price of LPG in the country using this Saudi CP as the base price. BERC calculates the dollar price for the entire month by averaging the invoice price of the importing company.
