Prices of cigarettes, rods, foreign cosmetics may increase

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury is presenting the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the National Parliament. The size of the proposed budget has been estimated at Tk9,38,000 crore.

He began presenting the budget in the National Parliament at 3 pm today, Thursday (June 11). This is the largest national budget in the country's history.

The proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year proposes to increase duties and taxes on various products including cigarettes, nicotine products, cars, imported food products, construction materials. If these proposals are implemented, the prices of these products may increase.

Cigarettes

A proposal has been made to re-fix the minimum retail price of cigarettes. It proposes to fix the price of 10 rods of low-level cigarettes at Tk62, medium-level at Tk92, high-level at Tk160 and ultra-high-level at Tk210. This may increase the price of cigarettes.

Nicotine Granules and Nicotine Pouch

A new code has been proposed to discourage the import of nicotine granules and nicotine pouches, which are very harmful to public health, and impose a supplementary duty of 350 percent. This may increase the price of these products.

MS Rod

VAT has been increased on various materials used to make rods. This may increase the price of MS Rod.

Foreign Cashew Nuts

Import duty on unprocessed and processed cashew nuts has been increased from 1 percent and 5 percent to 25 percent. This may increase the price of foreign cashew nuts.

Foreign Pangas Fillets

A supplementary duty of 20 percent has been imposed on imported Pangas fish fillets. This may increase the price of foreign Pangas.

Foreign Gas Cylinders

VAT has been imposed on the import of composite LPG cylinders. This may increase the price of these cylinders.

Foreign honey

The customs duty on foreign natural honey has been increased by $2 per unit to $7. This may increase the cost of importing honey and the price may increase.

Foreign betel nut

The customs duty on foreign betel nut imports has been increased by $0.25 per unit. This may increase the price of betel nut.

Foreign food products

The customs duty on various imported products including sugar confectionery, coffee and ready meals has been increased. This may increase the price of these food products.

Foreign cosmetics

The customs duty on similar products including lip liners and lip gels has been increased. This may increase the price of these products.

Oil-powered vehicles

It has been proposed to increase the tax on imported vehicles powered by internal combustion engines of 1,200 to 1,600 cc from 132.36 percent to about 156 percent. This may increase the price of these vehicles.

Other Imported Products

Due to increased tariffs and customs duties, the prices of foreign tiles, sanitary ware, basins, foam, microwave ovens, bicycles and parts, toys, etc. may increase.
