Primary teacher candidates stage sit-in at Shahbagh over appointment letters

Candidates recommended for government primary school assistant teacher posts but yet to receive appointment letters staged a sit-in at Shahbagh in Dhaka on Sunday (September 27), demanding their appointments.

More than 200 candidates joined the protest, which began around 11am in front of the National Museum. They had gathered earlier outside Dhaka University Central Library before marching to Shahbagh.

The protesters demanded a fresh and fair review of candidates excluded during the verification process, saying those who were cleared in the final recruitment should not be denied appointments without proper scrutiny. They said the sit-in would continue until their demands are addressed.

A platform of the candidates claims 2,385 people were dropped during verification, although the figure could not be independently verified. The government had recommended 14,384 candidates for appointment under the 2025 primary assistant teacher recruitment, with appointment letters starting to be issued on September 24.

Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milan said candidates who do not receive appointment letters by October 1 will have their cases properly reviewed and letters issued in phases after scrutiny and verification.

The ministry has described police verification as a routine part of government recruitment.
