Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, the prime accused in the brutal murder of scrap trader Sohag in Old Dhaka, has confessed to the crime before a metropolitan magistrate.

Mohin's confessional statement was recorded on Sunday in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Mahbubur Rahman. After the end of his police remand, Mohin was produced before the court where he voluntarily agreed to give a statement. Upon request by the investigating officer, Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Moniruzzaman, the court recorded the confession under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and ordered Mohin to be sent to jail.

The accused had previously been remanded for questioning in two phases — five days beginning July 10, and another five days starting July 15.

The incident occurred on July 9 near the gate of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital in Mitford, Old Dhaka. Sohag, 39, also known as Lal Chand, was reportedly hacked, beaten, and bludgeoned to death with stones in a gruesome attack.

Following the murder, Sohag’s elder sister filed a case at Kotwali Police Station. In addition, police filed a separate case under the Arms Act in connection with the incident.
