Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived in Sylhet on Wednesday (June 17) on a daylong official visit focused on welfare programme rollout and a political briefing session in Moulvibazar district.

He flew from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on a US-Bangla Airlines flight and landed at Sylhet Osmani International Airport at around 10:15am (local time).

Tight security arrangements were in place at the airport ahead of his arrival, with additional law enforcement deployed across key access points.

From the airport, the Prime Minister travelled by road to Sreemangal in Moulvibazar.

According to the official schedule, he is set to attend a “Family Card” distribution programme as the chief guest at Victoria High School ground in Sreemangal at 1:00pm. The initiative is part of a broader government welfare scheme aimed at supporting low-income households.

Following the Sreemangal event, he is scheduled to visit Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila in the afternoon, where another similar programme will be held at the Government High School ground at around 2:30pm.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister is expected to attend a political meeting at Dusai Resort at around 4:45pm, where party leaders and local representatives will be present to discuss organisational matters and ongoing development priorities in the region.

After completing all scheduled engagements, he is expected to return to Dhaka in the evening via Sylhet Osmani International Airport at approximately 8:30pm.

Officials said the visit underscores the government’s focus on expanding social safety net programmes and strengthening direct outreach with grassroots communities.

Local administration in both Sylhet and Moulvibazar has been instructed to ensure smooth execution of the programmes throughout the day.
