Principal assaulted in Cgt: Chhatra Dal leader among 3 released on bond
The Principal of an educational institute in Chandgaon, Chittagong, was allegedly assaulted and his institution forcibly locked by a group led by a local Chhatra Dal leader after he refused to pay extortion money.
The incident took place on the night of July 8 at the 'Wahid Electricians Welfare Foundation,' a training center for underprivileged youth run by Principal Md Abdul Baten.
The accused, Raihanul Islam, identified as the joint general secretary of Chandgaon Thana Chhatra Dal, along with two associates, allegedly demanded money and attacked the Principal when he refused.
Despite police presence, the situation remained tense until North Division Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Amirul Islam intervened and arrested the three. They were later released on bond after a written assurance that such incidents would not recur.
Principal Baten claimed the attack was part of an ongoing campaign of harassment by an organized group. "For years they've been demanding extortion. I even filed a complaint with RAB-7 last November, but no action was taken," he said, adding that the attackers resumed intimidation after being released.
He further alleged that one of his staff members was assaulted twice the following day, and that threats and disruptions to his institute's operations continue despite police involvement.
DC North Amirul Islam acknowledged the principal's longstanding complaints and confirmed the arrests, adding, "Law enforcement is monitoring the situation."
OC Aftab Uddin said, "We held discussions with both parties throughout the night. Eventually, the accused were released on bond after providing a written statement promising that such incidents will not be repeated."
