Prisoner under treatment at DMCH dies

A prisoner named Shahin Alam (40) has died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital. Doctors declared him dead around 5am on Thursday, October 1. Jail and hospital sources conveyed the information.

Shahin Alam was arrested in a criminal case filed with Jatrabari Police Station in the capital and was imprisoned in Dhaka Central Jail. His home is in Islampur of Jamalpur. His father's name is M A Bachir.

Jail and hospital sources said Shahin Alam was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on the orders of jail authorities due to physical illness on the night of Wednesday, September 30. He was later admitted to Ward No. 701 of the hospital's Medicine Department.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Selim Hossain of the Dhaka Medical College police camp said Shahin Alam's body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy. The process of handing over the body to his family will be completed after the autopsy.

Meanwhile, the deaths of prisoners on the way from jail to hospital and while undergoing treatment at hospital have recently sparked discussion. On Wednesday itself, a special report presented statistics on the deaths of prisoners on the way from jail to hospital.

According to data from the Prisons Directorate and various hospitals in Dhaka, 1,235 prisoners died in nearly five years and nine months from 2021 to September 28, 2026. Among them, at least 300 died on the way from jail to hospital.

In recent times, too, several prison inmates taken to Dhaka hospitals for treatment have died. The cause of Shahin Alam's death will become clearer after reviewing the autopsy and related medical documents.
