Producing good doctors impossible without quality medical colleges: Health adviser
It is not possible to produce good doctors without improving the quality of medical colleges in the country, said Nurjahan Begum, health adviser to the interim government.
“For this reason, the government is taking necessary steps to improve the quality without increasing the number of seats in medical colleges,” she said while talking to reporters on Friday (January 17) morning after visiting Dhaka Residential Model College, a centre for the admission test for the MBBS course.
Nurjahan Begum said, "What is the need to increase the number of seats? If we cannot maintain the quality and do not get good teachers, how will good doctors be produced? So, we are trying to think about the issue."
She also said that the government is mulling the upgradation of government hospitals to government medical colleges.
The MBBS admission test for the 2024-25 academic year of government and private medical colleges in the country was held from 10am to 11am on Friday.
The total number of seats in the country's 38 government medical colleges is 5,380. Of these, Narayanganj Medical College has not yet started its academic activities. There are 6,293 seats in 67 private medical colleges.
