Propaganda against BNP a well-planned conspiracy: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that the ongoing propaganda against the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is part of a well-orchestrated conspiracy aimed at destroying nationalist political forces in the country.
Speaking at a book launch event titled "Tarique Rahman: The Hope of Bangladesh" at a hotel in Gulshan on Sunday, Fakhrul said, “This is not random criticism it is a deliberate campaign with a clear objective: to eliminate nationalist ideology from Bangladesh. The main target is Tarique Rahman, a rising leader with potential, who is being subjected to character assassination.”
He emphasized that Tarique Rahman’s leadership stems not just from his family background but from his own capabilities. “Some people attribute his position to his family, but I believe that undermines his individual qualities. His rise is based on personal merit, not just lineage,” Fakhrul stated.
Having worked closely with Tarique Rahman since Khaleda Zia's imprisonment, Fakhrul praised his organizational skills. “He possesses exceptional political acumen. Few politicians can mobilize grassroots support across the country as rapidly and effectively as he has,” he said.
Recalling a 2002 state visit to China with then-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Fakhrul shared a personal anecdote. “During the Guard of Honor at the Great Hall in Beijing, Khaleda Zia introduced Tarique Rahman to the Chinese Premier, who warmly shook his hand and said, ‘Carry the flag of your father and mother.’ That message still resonates today.”
Fakhrul added that despite enduring political persecution, exile, and separation from family, Tarique Rahman has remained steadfast. “He never bowed down—just like his mother. His resilience is a testament to his leadership.”
He also acknowledged the contribution of BNP-affiliated online activists and bloggers in past political movements and assured continued support from the party.
The event was chaired by Ismail Zabihullah, a member of the BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council, and moderated by Krishak Dal General Secretary Shahidul Islam Babul. Among the speakers were economist Professor Mahbub Ullah, Dhaka University Professor Morshed Hasan Khan, political analyst Dr. Zahid Ur Rahman, BNP acting chairman's advisor Mahdi Amin, and Associate Professor Sathawat Hossain Sayon of Bangladesh Medical University.
