Protest continues in front of Jamuna demanding ban on AL
Students are still staging a sit-in protest in front of Jamuna, the residence of the Chief Adviser of the interim government, demanding the trial and banning of the Awami League.
The sit-in began at 10.00pm on Thursday (May 8). As of 8.00 am Friday (May 9), several hundred leaders and activists of the National Citizens Party (NCP) are still protesting there, chanting slogans from time to time.
Around 2.00am on Friday, NCP Convener Nahid Islam said, “The first duty of the interim government was to ban the Awami League. We raised this demand both inside and outside the government. But now, after nine months, we are back on the streets to demand a ban on the Awami League.”
Earlier, at 10.00pm on Thursday, NCP’s chief organizer for the southern region, Hasnat Abdullah, announced the sit-in in front of Jamuna. Later, NCP Convener Nahid Islam and other student leaders joined the protest there.
Leaders and activists from various organizations have been seen joining the protest. After 1.00am, some leaders and activists of Islami Andolan and Hefazat-e-Islam arrived in front of Jamuna. Around 1:30 am, a few leaders and activists of the AB Party also arrived. At 2.00am, central leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir came to the protest site.
Meanwhile, police and RAB have taken position in front of the Chief Adviser’s residence, while the students are occupying the road. They are chanting slogans like “One two three four, Awami League no more,” “No place in Bangladesh for the killer League,” “Ban Awami League".
