Tensions flared in front of the National Press Club on Sunday afternoon as police clashed with a group of aspiring teachers protesting delays in recruitment under the Non-Government Teachers' Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA).

The situation escalated around 1:25 PM when demonstrators attempted to march toward the Secretariat, breaking through police barricades. In response, law enforcement used sound grenades and batons to disperse the crowd. Eyewitnesses reported that more than five sound grenades were deployed before the baton charge began.

The demonstrators were protesting prolonged delays and various restrictions in the NTRCA’s recruitment process. Many of them claim to have passed the registration exams years ago but have yet to receive appointments. The recent recruitment notice has further inflamed frustration, with many candidates disqualified due to age limits and other conditions.

As protestors began marching toward the Secretariat, police blocked their path, leading to scuffles and brief chases between the two sides. A large number of protesters remain stationed in front of the Press Club, insisting on continuing their demonstration peacefully, though the atmosphere remains tense.

Earlier, on June 8, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) issued a public notice banning all forms of public gatherings, rallies, and processions around the Secretariat. The order, aimed at ensuring public order and the safety of the Chief Adviser, took effect on June 9 and remains in force across key areas, including Hotel Intercontinental intersection, Kakrail Mosque junction, Officers’ Club junction, and Minto Road.

In light of the protest, additional police personnel have been deployed in the area. Law enforcement remains on high alert, prepared to disperse the crowd if necessary.
