A protest programme was held in Shyamnagar, Satkhira, by an organisation called 'Conscious Civil Society' demanding the resignation of Gazi Nazrul Islam, Member of Parliament for the Satkhira-4 constituency.

The programme took place on Tuesday (July 28) at 11am on the main road in front of the government food godown in the upazila. Residents from various areas of the upazila participated in the programme. The protesters took positions on both sides of the road and shouted slogans, causing disruption to traffic on the Shyamnagar-Munshiganj road for some time.

Speakers at the programme included local residents Abdul Majid, Idris Haji, Gazi Shah Alam, Chabina Khatun, Momtaz Begum and Ebadul Islam. They said the personal conduct and moral stance of a public representative are important to the people. Questions have arisen in the public mind following a video circulating on social media recently. They demanded that Gazi Nazrul Islam step down from his position as MP, taking moral responsibility for the matter.

They further said a proper investigation and necessary action are essential. They threatened stricter programmes if their demands are not met, including shutting down Satkhira and surrounding the MP's residence. They also declared him unwanted in Shyamnagar.

On the night of July 20, multiple videos showing Gazi Nazrul Islam in a private moment with a young woman went viral on social media. In a Facebook post the following day, Gazi Nazrul Islam claimed the woman in the video was his second wife. However, protests and demonstrations in his constituency have continued despite his explanation. Following the incident, Jamaat-e-Islami expelled him from the party. He has largely stayed out of public view since.
