Protest with brooms held against Barrister Fuad
Locals staged a broom procession against Asaduzzaman Fuad, secretary general of Amar Bangladesh AB Party, protesting his remarks in the media labelling residents of the area as extortionists.
On Wednesday December 10 afternoon, men and women from Babuganj–Mirganj area joined the protest under a banner representing locals. The procession started from Lohalia village and concluded at Mirganj ferry terminal with a brief rally.
Protesters said Fuad referred to people of Babuganj as extortionists in his media comments, for which they seek an explanation. They also demanded that he apologise and face action for making derogatory comments.
Fuad has declared his intention to contest the upcoming election as the AB Party candidate from Barishal–3 constituency, consisting of Muladi and Babuganj. He is originally a resident of Babuganj. On December 8, at the foundation stone laying ceremony for Mirganj Bridge, he told the media that some locals had demanded money from the construction firm.
The following day, locals protested immediately and even confronted him. Later, the upazila unit of Chhatra Dal declared him unwelcome in Babuganj.
The next day Fuad addressed a press conference at Barishal Press Club and Reporters’ Unity, presenting his explanation on the matter.
