Protests continue at Jamuna shopping mall, traders demand compensation
Traders staged a protest in front of Jamuna Future Park on Saturday, demanding enhanced security at the mall, compensation for thefts in mobile phone shops, and the resignation of the market's general manager (GM).
The protest began around 12pm, with traders blocking the road in front of the mall.
Police and army personnel were deployed to control the situation.
By 1:30pm, the traders moved their demonstration inside the market premises.
On Friday afternoon, shop owners and employees had also blocked Pragati Sarani in front of the mall to voice their grievances but dispersed by evening following efforts by law enforcement and army personnel.
The protesters claimed that several mobile phone shops were burglarized on Thursday night, resulting in losses estimated at Tk4-5 crore.
Frustrated by the incident, shop owners and workers took to the streets to demand accountability and compensation.
Assistant Commissioner (AC) HM Shafiqur Rahman of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Gulshan Division’s Badda Zone said: “Business owners began protesting following the theft at midnight on Thursday. We are working to ensure they do not block the roads or cause public inconvenience.”
He added: “On Saturday around noon, the shopkeepers again protested by blocking the road but moved inside the market shortly after.”
The incident has sparked concerns about the security arrangements at one of Dhaka's largest shopping malls.
Authorities are yet to provide updates regarding the theft or actions to address the traders' demands.
