Protests outside Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi turn violent
Hundreds of protesters clashed with police outside the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi on Monday (December 23), following the killing of garment worker Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, Bangladesh.
Members of the World Hindu Council (VHP) broke through police barricades and attempted to approach the diplomatic mission, shouting slogans and carrying banners.
Authorities had deployed multiple layers of barricades, additional police, and paramilitary forces to secure the High Commission.
Similar demonstrations were held in Kolkata and Siliguri, prompting temporary suspension of visa services at Bangladesh’s consulates and visa centers in those cities. In Kolkata, protesters reportedly tore down Bangladesh flags and burned an effigy of the Deputy High Commissioner.
In response, Bangladesh summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Earlier in the morning, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka.
Diplomatic sources said Verma was briefed on the security situation and urged to strengthen protection at Bangladesh missions in India.
