Proxy voting recommended for expatriates: EC Sanaullah

Election Commissioner (EC) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah said that he has recommended proxy voting for expatriates in the upcoming national elections.

He gave this information at a press conference held at the Election Commission office around 11 am on Tuesday.

Md Sanaullah said, “The current voting system for expatriates, that is, the postal ballot system, is an obsolete system. Not a single vote has been cast from abroad in this system.”

He said, “To fulfill the aspirations and expectations of expatriates in the upcoming elections, proxy voting will have to be done. It is available in several countries. This is the only method through which an expatriate can cast his vote in real time.”

EC Sanaullah said, “A workshop will be held on proxy voting, talking to different parties. After that, we will discuss with various stakeholders including political parties. I will be able to say by April 15 how long it will take to develop this system. If everyone finally agrees, the current law will have to be changed.

The Election Commissioner said, "With this system, an expatriate will be able to choose the person who will vote for him."
