The Government of Bangladesh has officially handed over the title deeds of a Gulshan property to former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, formalising her ownership of the residence nearly four decades after it was originally allotted.

The handover took place on Wednesday night (4 June), when Housing and Public Works Ministry Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan visited the BNP leader’s residence and presented the official documents. He was accompanied by Public Works Secretary Nazrul Islam and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) Chairman Riazul Islam Riju.

Speaking to the media, Khaleda Zia’s private secretary ABM Abdus Sattar confirmed the visit, stating that the officials spent about half an hour with the BNP Chairperson in what was described as a courtesy call.

The property, located at 196 Gulshan Avenue in Dhaka, sits on approximately 1.5 bighas of land. It was originally allotted to Khaleda Zia by the government following the assassination of her husband, then-President Ziaur Rahman, on 31 May 1981.

While the former prime minister has resided in the property for many years, the legal transfer of ownership had remained pending until now.

According to sources, the residence has long been under her control, but it was not formally registered in her name. The title registration was reportedly initiated during the tenure of the previous caretaker government.

Khaleda Zia had also been allotted a second property within Dhaka Cantonment, but that allotment was revoked by the Awami League-led government during a previous term in office.
