Punjabi leads family to found missing elderly man's skeleton in Gazipur
Police have recovered the skeleton of an 80-year-old man from a bush in Sreepur of Gazipur, nearly 12 days after he went missing, with family members identifying him from the Punjabi found beside the remains.
The skeleton was recovered from a bush in Nijmaona village under Gazipur Union on Wednesday afternoon (July 15).
According to local residents, a child spotted the skeleton while fishing nearby and alerted locals. When residents reached the scene, they noticed a Punjabi lying beside the remains and informed police after suspecting it could belong to a missing person.
Later, Jakir Hossain, the victim's son-in-law, identified the clothing as belonging to Shamsul Haque, confirming the skeleton to be that of the missing elderly man.
Shamsul Haque, a resident of Channapara area under Ward No. 7 of Sreepur municipality, had been living in Nijmaona since 2021, after purchasing land beside his daughter's house following the death of his wife.
Family members said he had been missing since July 3. After extensive searches failed to locate him, a general diary (GD) was filed with Sreepur Model Police Station on the same day.
Nearly two weeks later, his skeletal remains were discovered only a short distance from his residence.
Sreepur Model Police Station Inspector (Operations) Sanjoy Saha said the skeleton has been sent to the morgue of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Police said an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
