A Bangladeshi expatriate who recently returned from Qatar was hacked to death by a group of assailants at a residential building at Sabujbagh in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon (September 6).

The victim, identified as Sifat, lived in Dholairpar area of Jatrabari, according to his friend Md Hasan.

Police said Sifat went to a flat on the fifth floor of a residential building in the Baraitala area of Adarsh Para around noon. The flat was occupied by a woman, who police said was his friend and was alone at the time.

Around 3pm, several people entered the flat and attacked Sifat with sharp weapons before fleeing, police said. He was initially taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Doctors at DMCH declared him dead around 5:30pm.

Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sabujbagh police station, said, "Investigators had collected CCTV footage from a neighbouring building. The footage showed four people entering and leaving the flat, with one of them carrying a sharp weapon."

The group reportedly stayed inside the building for five to six minutes. Police are working to identify and apprehend those involved.

The woman has been brought to the police station for questioning as part of the investigation, the OC said.
