Rain, thundershowers likely across country, heat set to rise

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast rain or thundershowers across all eight divisions, while warning that temperatures may rise slightly over the coming days as humid heat persists.

In its five-day forecast issued on Sunday evening (September 13), the Met Office said parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions could see temporary gusty winds with light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Similar conditions are expected in isolated areas of Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions. Some areas may also receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

Day and night temperatures across the country are likely to increase slightly during the period, the forecast said.

For Dhaka and neighbouring areas, the six-hour forecast from 7am Monday said skies could remain partly cloudy to cloudy, with a chance of light rain or thunderstorms. Winds may blow from the south or southeast at 10-15 kmph, while daytime temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.

The highest temperature recorded in the country on Sunday was 35.5°C in Feni and Ramgati in Lakshmipur. Dhaka recorded a maximum of 34.4°C. At 6am Monday, the capital’s temperature was 26°C.

Rangpur received the highest rainfall on Sunday at 66mm, while Dhaka recorded 14mm.

The low-pressure area that had formed over the Bay of Bengal weakened and merged with the monsoon trough, but humid conditions are expected to persist.

The sun is due to be set in Dhaka at 6:04pm on Monday and rise at 5:45am on Tuesday.
