Rajbari incident not communal, linked to extortion and crime: Press Secy
The interim government has clarified that Wednesday night’s mob attack in Pansha of Rajbari, which left one person dead, was not a communal incident.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Thursday (December 26), Shafiqul Alam, press secretary of the interim government, said preliminary police investigations indicate the violence stemmed from extortion and other criminal activities.
The deceased, identified as top criminal Amrit Mondol alias Samrat, was reportedly in the area to collect extortion money when he clashed with local residents.
Police confirmed that Samrat had multiple pending cases, including murder and extortion, with active arrest warrants. His associate, Selim, was arrested at the scene with a foreign pistol and a pipe gun. Three cases have already been filed related to the incident.
The government condemned the killing and emphasised that it does not condone mob violence or lawlessness. It also urged citizens and media to refrain from spreading misleading or communal narratives that could threaten social harmony.
Authorities affirmed that legal action will be taken against anyone involved.
