Rangpur 4 murders: Questions raised over accused, police official wearing similar shirts

Questions have been raised over a shirt worn by one of the two accused arrested in the killing of former teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife and two children in Machhuapara area of Rangpur city. A similar shirt was seen being worn by an official of Rangpur Metropolitan Police on the day the bodies were recovered, sparking widespread discussion and criticism on social media.

In live videos from various Rangpur-based local Facebook pages, a person wearing a light-coloured striped shirt and a mask was seen walking up a staircase at the time the bodies were recovered. He was later identified as a police official. Photos and videos circulating on social media claimed that one of the arrested accused was also seen wearing a similar shirt at the time of the recovery. This visual similarity has raised various questions and suspicions online, although no information or evidence has so far come to light publicly that proves any direct link between the police official and the killings.

Regarding this, police have said that different individuals can well be wearing similar shirts, calling it a mere coincidence. According to police, multiple people can buy and wear clothing of the same design that is readily available in the market, and there is no scope to assume anyone's involvement based on that.

It may be mentioned that Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud, at a press conference held at the police commissioner's office on Sunday (August 23) afternoon, said Ganapati Chakraborty and four members of his family were killed centring on his objection to drug use. Two people, Mugdho Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, who are cousins, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
