Police have claimed to have solved the killing of four members of a retired teacher's family in Rangpur and arrested two suspects in connection with the case.

The arrested suspects were identified as Mugdha Das and Siddhartha. They are maternal cousins, according to Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud, who disclosed the details at a press briefing on Sunday (August 23).

Police said the two suspects were directly involved in the killings, which took place on Thursday night at the family's home in Machuapara of Rangpur city.

According to the police account, the two suspects were allegedly taking drugs on the rooftop when retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, also known as Jewel, went upstairs after hearing a noise. He was shirtless and had a gamcha around his neck, which the suspects allegedly used to strangle him.

Ganapati’s wife, Pritilata Chakraborty, went upstairs after hearing the commotion and was allegedly attacked on the staircase.

Their daughter, Agami Chakraborty Prapti, a master's student, came out of her room after hearing the noise and was also attacked. Police said the suspects initially struggled to kill her and eventually used a rope to strangle her.

The couple's son, Ayush Chakraborty Piyam, a fifth-grade student, was also killed allegedly because the suspects feared he could identify them, the police commissioner said.

Police recovered the bodies of Ganapati, Pritilata, Agami and Ayush from a locked house in the city’s Machuapara area on Saturday night.

The police investigation is continuing, while the exact motive and other circumstances surrounding the killings are being examined.
