Rangpur quadruple murder: Police to conduct dope tests on two accused

Police have decided to conduct dope tests on the two arrested suspects in connection with the murder of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife, and their two children . The move comes as investigators seek to verify claims of drug addiction, which police have cited as a motive for the killings.

The investigation took a significant turn on Tuesday as Simanto Das, a friend of the arrested suspects Mugdha Das and Siddhartha Das, gave a statement before the Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court . The investigating officer, Inspector Jinnat Ali of the Detective Branch (DB), confirmed that Simanto's account matched the confessional statements of the two accused . "The two suspects said they went to Simanto's house on the night of the incident and consumed yaba there, and Simanto gave the same account to the court," he said .

According to police, Siddhartha and Mugdha are accused of killing Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, their daughter Agami Chakraborty, and son Priyam Chakraborty on the night of August 21 . They were arrested from the same area on August 23 . The case was later transferred from Kotwali Police Station to the Detective Branch of Rangpur Metropolitan Police .

The decision to conduct dope tests on the two suspects has been initiated to strengthen the investigation. "The necessary permission was obtained on Monday morning. An official application for the drug tests has already been submitted. They will be sent for the tests today," said investigating officer Jinnat Ali .

The gruesome murders have sparked questions about the police investigation. Local residents have questioned the sequence of events, asking why the youths, after allegedly consuming yaba at Simanto's house, went to Ganapati's rooftop and killed four family members instead of fleeing . An unexplained power outage at the victims' home on the night of the incident has also emerged as a key mystery .

Following the murders, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud presented details of the incident, claiming the suspects were consuming yaba on the rooftop when they were confronted by Ganapati, leading to a fatal struggle . However, the family of the victims has rejected the police narrative, demanding a thorough investigation to uncover the truth . Rangpur Zilla School students, teachers, and local citizens have staged protests, demanding the arrest of the real culprits.
