Record rainfall paralyses Feni; shops collapse, roads flooded
Torrential rainfall in Feni has shattered seasonal records, with 233 millimeters of rain recorded in the past 24 hours—the highest so far this monsoon.
The relentless downpour, which continued for two consecutive days, was confirmed Tuesday morning by Md. Mojibur Rahman, the acting officer of the Feni Meteorological Office. He warned that more rain is expected over the next 2–3 days, potentially worsening the situation.
The heavy rainfall caused a breach in the Muhuri River embankment near Sripur Road in the Phulgazi Bazaar area, resulting in the collapse of several shops. Road traffic on the Nilokkhi–Gabtala route has been halted due to flooding and debris.
Several parts of the city, including Doctorpara, Shaheed Shahidullah Kaiser Road, the Old Registry Office area, Rampur, Pathanbari, Academy, Nazir Road, and Petrobangla, are experiencing severe waterlogging, bringing daily life to a standstill. Residents have been struggling to move through submerged roads since early morning.
Md. Abul Kashem, Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Feni Water Development Board, stated that although the Muhuri River remains below danger level, further rainfall upstream could raise water levels. Authorities are on high alert to prevent erosion and ensure public safety.
