Relief train derails while trying to rescue Brahmaputra Express in Mymensingh
A derailment involving the intercity Brahmaputra Express has spiralled into a double incident after a railway relief train sent to the scene also came off the tracks, deepening the disruption on the Dhaka–Jamalpur corridor.
The intercity Brahmaputra Express, travelling from Dewanganj in Jamalpur to Dhaka, had a bogie come off the tracks at a level crossing in the city's College Road area at around 9:30am on Wednesday — immediately suspending all train movement on the Dhaka–Jamalpur route.
The situation then deteriorated further when a railway relief train, dispatched to the scene to assist in the recovery, also derailed at the outer signal area of Mymensingh station.
The second derailment significantly complicated rescue efforts, leaving two immobilised trains on the same stretch of track and effectively blocking the corridor from both ends.
Railway authorities confirmed the double incident but did not provide an immediate timeline for when services could be restored.
Confirming the matter, Mymensingh Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Akhtar Hossain said, "The Brahmaputra Express derailed at the College Road level crossing. After the relief team arrived and began recovery work, the relief train also derailed near the outer area of Mymensingh station."
Recovery teams from Bangladesh Railway remained at the site, working to re-rail the displaced bogies of both trains and clear the line. The cause of either derailment had not been officially determined as of the latest update, and no immediate information was available regarding injuries or casualties among passengers or crew.
Passengers travelling on the Dhaka–Jamalpur and Jamalpur–Dhaka routes faced indefinite delays with no confirmed restoration time. The Dhaka–Mymensingh–Jamalpur corridor is one of the region's key intercity rail links, and a prolonged suspension was expected to affect a significant number of daily commuters and long-distance travellers.
