Remittance inflow rises 32.6% to $1.89b in first 17 days of August
Nearly $1.89 billion in remittances flowed into country during the first 17 days of August, marking a 32.6 per cent increase from the same period a year earlier, according to Bangladesh Bank data.
Central bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan confirmed the figures on Tuesday (August 18).
Remittances totalled $1.887 billion from August 1 to 17, compared with $1.424 billion during the corresponding period last year.
On August 17 alone, expatriate Bangladeshis sent $120.54 million through official channels, according to the central bank.
At an exchange rate of Tk 123 to the dollar, the remittances received during the first 17 days of August were worth around Tk 23,210 crore.
The strong inflow has also continued since the beginning of the 2026-27 fiscal year. Bangladesh received $4.746 billion in remittances between July 1 and August 17, up from $3.902 billion during the same period of the previous fiscal year.
That represents an increase of $844 million, or 21.6 per cent, year on year in the first 48 days of the fiscal year.
The continued rise in remittances is strengthening one of Bangladesh’s key sources of foreign exchange and providing support to the country’s reserves and broader economy.
Bangladesh Bank has attributed the stronger inflow partly to an increase in remittances through formal channels. If the trend continues, the higher inflow could further support the country’s external balance and overall economic stability.
