Renowned journo Golam Sarwar's 83rd birthday today
The 83rd birthday of late Golam Sarwar, renowned journalist, valiant freedom fighter and founding editor of Samakal, is today, Tuesday. He was born on April 1, 1943, in Banaripara, Barishal. He is considered one of the craftsmen of the country's modern newspapers. Golam Sarwar, was the news editor of Daily Ittefaq for three decades, was also the founding editor of Daily Jugantar. He died on August 13, 2018, at the age of 75, while serving as the editor of Samakal.
Golam Sarwar, a personality like an institution in journalism in the country, took up journalism as a profession in the 1960s. Since then, for more than five decades, he has established himself and the newspapers of Bangladesh at a unique height with his talent, rationality, professionalism, responsibility, and continuous practice of non-communal thought and consciousness in this profession. He has received the highest national honour, the Ekushey Padak, for his unique contribution to journalism.
Golam Sarwar's journalism career began in 1962 as a university correspondent for the Daily Azadi in Chattogram while he was a student at Dhaka University. In the same year, he joined the Daily Sangbad as an associate editor. In 1971, he joined the Liberation War. After the Liberation War, he served as the head teacher at Banaripara Union Institution for a few months. In 1972, he joined the Daily Ittefaq as a senior associate editor. After that, he served as the chief associate editor, joint news editor and news editor respectively until 1999.
Many called Golam Sarwar the 'teacher of journalists' due to his excellence in talent, dedication and skill. He was also the founding president of the Bangladesh Editors' Council, an organization of editors of daily newspapers in Bangladesh.
On the occasion of his birthday, his family will pay tribute to him at the Mirpur Shaheed Buddhijibi Graveyard after Asr prayers today, Tuesday. The late editor's son-in-law, Mia Naeem Habib, said that the family has organized a memorial service, tributes and prayers for him at his village home in Banaripara.
