Reports of shooting at Nahid Islam’s office false
Police have said that a shooting incident in Dhaka’s Badda area did not take place at the election office of National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam.
From Wednesday afternoon, January 14, various social media posts claimed that a shooting had occurred at Nahid Islam’s election camp. As the posts spread rapidly, confusion arose. In response, the NCP issued a statement via WhatsApp at around 5:00pm.
The statement said that a shooting incident took place on Tuesday in the area adjacent to the NCP organisational office in Ward No. 38 of Badda. However, it was not an election office, nor was it Nahid Islam’s office. It also stated that there was no political involvement in the incident at a preliminary level. The message was sent by Mahabub Alam, chief of the NCP election media subcommittee.
When contacted, Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Badda zone Md Asaduzzaman said that two rounds were fired late Tuesday night targeting an office of a housing company in North Badda.
He said that until November, the location had housed an NCP office, but it was relocated to Aftabnagar that month. Therefore, the incident could not be described as an attack on an NCP office or election camp. He added that two blank rounds were fired at the scene.
