Restoring public trust in elections a major challenge: CEC
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin acknowledged that restoring public trust in elections is a significant challenge.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with election officials in Rangpur on Saturday (August 9), he emphasized that organizing a free, fair, and impartial election remains the primary task for both the government and the Election Commission.
Highlighting the global law and order context, the CEC noted that while political transitions often lead to unrest in many countries, Bangladesh's situation remains relatively stable. He expressed hope for further improvement in law and order ahead of the upcoming election.
The CEC also addressed past electoral controversies, stating that this election would meet international standards. He stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns to restore confidence in the electoral process and ensure a transparent, accountable election.
Regarding election staff, the CEC mentioned plans to replace field officers criticized in previous elections. He also outlined strategies for voting in line with the country's geographical challenges.
On media involvement, the CEC called on journalists to act responsibly and stated that the media plays a vital role in supporting the Election Commission. However, he flagged the misuse of social media and AI technology as significant challenges, with the commission working on ways to address these issues.
Finally, the CEC warned that any disruptions at polling stations could lead to the suspension of voting in nearby centers to maintain order and fairness.
