The reported killing of a rickshaw driver at a shopping mall in Uttara Sector-13 is false, DMP Additional Police Commissioner Nazrul Islam said.

He made the statement on Monday morning (March 16) after inspecting the market.

Confirming about the rumours, he said, "Some miscreants created a mob at the market in an attempt to loot."

He added that no formal case has been filed yet, but six police personnel were injured while trying to control the situation. Evidence is being collected to bring those involved to justice.

The market remains closed, and business owners reported losses exceeding tens of millions of taka, expressing ongoing fear among vendors.

The incident follows a social media claim on Sunday night that a rickshaw driver had been beaten to death and the body hidden inside the Uttara Square Shopping Mall, which triggered protests.

Locals and rickshaw drivers surrounded the building and damaged property, blocking the road in anger. Police intervened to control the mob, leading to several clashes.

To restore order, police deployed sound grenades and tear gas, and additional police and military forces were sent to the area.
