Road accidents kill 423, injure 589 in October

A total of 423 people were killed and 589 injured in 452 road accidents across the country in October, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) said.

The information was released in a monthly report signed by BRTA Chairman Abu Momtaz Saad Uddin Ahmed on Tuesday (November 18). The report has been prepared based on information collected from various divisional offices of the country.

According to the report, Dhaka division had the highest number of accidents - 109 people were killed and 163 were injured in a total of 115 accidents. Chittagong division had 89 deaths and 188 injuries in 98 accidents. Both Rajshahi and Khulna divisions had 54 deaths each in 54 and 59 accidents respectively. Barisal had 21 deaths and 59 injuries in 29 accidents; Sylhet had 22 deaths and 23 injuries in 23 accidents; In Rangpur, 48 people were killed in 51 accidents and in Mymensingh, 26 people were killed in 23 accidents.

A total of 695 motor vehicles were involved in these accidents throughout October. Of these, 114 were buses and minibuses, 124 were trucks and covered vans, 164 were motorcycles, 41 were autorickshaws, 27 were easy bikes, 11 were battery-powered rickshaws, 23 were microbuses, 31 were pickups, 22 were vans, 15 were motorcars or jeeps, five were tractors and 118 were others.

As for the loss of life by vehicle type, it can be seen that the highest number of deaths were in motorcycle accidents - 130 while 64 were killed in buses or minibuses, 48 ​​in truck-covered van accidents, 32 in autorickshaws, 17 in easy bikes, eight in microbuses, 11 in pickups, 21 in vans and 96 in other vehicles.
