Road blocked over unpaid wages, protest ended after joint forces' assurances
Workers of AB Apparels garment factory in Hemayetpur of Savar blocked the road in protest demanding payment of their unpaid wages on Sunday. Later, after assurances from the joint forces, they withdrew the blockade and returned to work.
Around 8:30am, AB Apparels workers blocked the Singair-Hemayetpur road to protest. They said that although it was already the 26th of the month, the factory owners had still not paid their wages. Despite repeated promises, the management failed to make the payments.
The workers demanded payment of their unpaid wages from last month, current month’s wages, and Eid bonuses. Later, joint forces arrived and contacted the factory management. After receiving assurances from the authorities, the workers lifted the blockade and resumed work.
The factory management promised to pay April’s wages that day and to provide the current month’s wages and Eid bonuses before the Eid holiday.
Mominul Islam Bhuiyan, Superintendent of Industrial Police-1, said, "The workers protested for their wages. The industrial police communicated with the factory owner, who promised to pay last month’s wages today. Following this assurance, the workers lifted the blockade and returned to work."
Attempts to reach the factory owner, Ananta Jalil, were unsuccessful. However, Jewel Mia, Officer-in-Charge of Savar Model Police Station, said, "This morning, workers of AB Apparels Limited blocked the road demanding unpaid wages. Police were dispatched to the scene. I heard the issue has been resolved. Further details will be provided later."
