On an average, some 25,000 people killed in separate road accidents in Bangladesh, said Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS) Secretary General Md Mozammel Haque.

Referring to a World Health Organization (WHO) released a few years earlier, he said that at least
24,954 people were killed in road crashes in the country in 2016.

He was addressing a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Saturday morning on the occasion of National Road Safety Day.

Saying that the number is almost 10 times the official number given, he demanded compensation for the victims as per Road Transport ACT.

He also claimed that if the e-trafficking system is introduced, the road accidents will be reduced by 80 percent.

The loss of GDP due to road accidents is 5.3 percent in Bangladesh, he added.

Over 15 per 1 lakh people had fallen victim to road crashes in 2016, according to the Global Status Report on Road Safety-2018.

However, official data says 2,463 people were killed and 2,134 others injured in 2,566 road accidents in 2016.
