Five dead bodies and three critically injured people were recovered from a vessel on the Meghna river in Chandpur on Monday. Later, two of those injured died at a local hospital, raising the death toll to seven in the incident.

"Two died at Chandpur 250-bed General Hospital while taking treatment," Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin Uddin told.

Another injured was sent to Dhaka for better treatment, he added.

The DC said that the incident had occurred on the Meghna river under Chandpur Sadar upazila in an area adjacent to Shariatpur.

Five people were initially found dead and three were found injured, the DC said quoting Chandpur River Police.

The bodies were recovered from MV Al-Bakhera—a vessel carrying fertiliser from Chattogram to Dhaka—around 3:00pm, said Chandpur River Police Superintendent Md Mushfiqur Rahman, adding that the vessel had run aground on a char (shoal) when the bodies were recovered.

He said, "The vessel was attacked by miscreants some time last night or today, when they indiscriminately hacked eight people on the vessel and left."

After receiving information, law enforcement, including coast guard and river police, recovered the dead bodies and the critically injured people from the vessel. The dead bodies were all found in separate rooms, he added.

At the time of writing this report, the victims' identity or the reason behind the incident could not be known.
