Robbery followed by stabbing, burning leaves village doctor Khokon Das dead
Village doctor Khokon Das has died after being brutally attacked by miscreants in Damudya upazila of Shariatpur. He succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 8:00 am on Saturday, January 3, four days after the attack. The death was confirmed by Damudya police station OC Md Rabiul Haque.
According to police and local sources, the attack took place around 9:30 pm on Wednesday, December 31, in the Tiloi area of Koneshwar union. Khokon Das had been running a medicine shop at Keurbhanga Bazar for a long time. As usual, he was returning home after closing his shop.
When he reached near his house, three to four assailants intercepted him, stabbed him indiscriminately with sharp weapons, and snatched the money he was carrying. Fearing their identities would be exposed, the attackers then poured petrol on his body and set him on fire.
Khokon Das was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where he died while undergoing treatment on Saturday morning.
In connection with the incident, Khokon Das’s father Paresh Chandra Das filed a case with Damudya police station. The accused named in the case are Sohag Khan, 27, son of Babul Khan, Rabbi Mollah, 21, son of Samsuddin Mollah, and Palash Sardar, 25, son of Shahid Sardar, all from the Koneshwar area.
Family members and locals have demanded the immediate arrest of the killers and exemplary punishment.
His sister Anna Rani Das said, “I want the killers of my brother to be brought under the law and punished with death.”
Another sister, Rima Das, said, “Even after four days, no one has been arrested. We are worried whether we will get justice.”
His father Paresh Chandra Das said, “Before his death, my son named three people. The case has been filed based on those names. I want justice for my son’s murder.”
OC Md Rabiul Haque said a case has been filed against three accused and raids are ongoing to arrest them.
