Robbery on Cox’s Bazar-Chattogram highway claims life of youth
A young man from Ukhiya lost his life in a brutal robbery on the Cox’s Bazar-Chattogram highway in the Dulahajara area of Chakaria late Thursday night. The assailants used a rope to stop vehicles before attacking passengers.
The deceased, Mahmudullah, was a resident of Shialia Para in Balukhali, Ukhia. He was returning home from Chattogram on personal business when the incident occurred around midnight. Tragedy had already struck his family recently—his wife passed away from illness just 22 days prior, and his parents had died earlier. The loss has left his two young children completely orphaned, plunging the family into deep grief.
According to local sources, robbers often use ropes across the highway to halt vehicles. On this occasion, the attackers assaulted the riders after stopping the motorcycle in the Malumghat area. Mahmudullah sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Four others were injured, two of whom remain in serious condition.
Residents of the area expressed concern over frequent robberies on the highway, especially late at night, demanding enhanced security measures to ensure safety.
Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Touhidul Anwar confirmed the death and injuries resulting from the robbery. He stated that additional police have been deployed and operations are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators.
Cox’s Bazar District Additional Superintendent of Police Jasim Uddin Chowdhury said authorities are investigating the incident thoroughly and assured that those responsible will face legal action. Increased surveillance has been implemented to prevent similar crimes on the highway.
