The incident took place in the Hasanpur Bridge area on the border of Mithamoin and Karimganj upazilas of the district on Sunday night (June 7).
According to local residents and victim sources, a group of 40 tourists from different parts of the country including Dhaka went to tour the haor area of Kishoreganj. They left Mithamoin for Balikhola ferry ghat in Karimganj upazila in a trawler on Sunday night. When the trawler reached the Hasanpur Bridge area, a group of robbers armed with country-made weapons boarded the trawler and took the passengers hostage. Later, they beat up the passengers and looted their belongings and fled.
A tourist named Rajib, who was a victim of the robbery, said, "We boarded the trawler from Mithamoin in the evening. Due to a sudden storm on the way, the trawler was stuck in one place for about an hour. After the storm stopped, the trawler set off again towards Balikhla Ghat in Karimganj. But as soon as we reached Hasanpur Bridge area, the bandits attacked us. They also beat and harassed the female passengers on the trawler and looted everything including mobile phones and gold ornaments."
The victimized passengers alleged that after the incident, they somehow got down at Balikhla Ghat and went to the tourist police. However, even after reporting the complaint, the tourist police did not cooperate with them.
