Tarique Rahman Robin, a former Chhatra Dal leader accused in the murder of scrap dealer Md Sohag in Old Dhaka, has confessed in court to his involvement in the crime.

Robin gave his statement voluntarily on Saturday afternoon (July 12) at the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Gias. After recording his confession, the court ordered him to be sent to jail.

Robin was previously the senior joint convener of Ward No. 30 Chhatra Dal under Chawkbazar Police Station. He was expelled from the student political organisation following the incident.

Earlier, on Thursday (July 11), the court had granted a two-day remand for Robin in connection with an arms case related to the murder. He gave his confession after being brought back to court at the end of his remand.

The incident took place on Wednesday evening around 6.00pm at Rajni Ghosh Lane near Gate No. 3 of Mitford Hospital. Md Sohag, a 43-year-old scrap dealer from Purba Namabari village in Keraniganj, was brutally beaten to death with bricks and stones. He had been running his business in the area for several years.

Two separate cases—a murder case and a weapons case—were filed at Kotwali Police Station. Police arrested two suspects: Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, who was remanded for five days, and Tarique Rahman Robin, who was remanded for two.

A video of the killing, showing Sohag being stoned in public, went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from the public.
