A Rohingya youth's ankle has been severed in a landmine explosion in Myanmar's Rakhine region across the border from Ukhia, Cox's Bazar.

The incident took place on Wednesday morning, April 15, in the Chakmakata area of Rakhine, opposite the Palangkhali border in Ukhia.

The injured, Md Yunus, is a resident of Ukhia Camp-19. He was rescued and first taken to the Kutupalong MSF hospital, and later admitted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital.

According to local sources, many Rohingya cross into Myanmar's territory while fishing in the Naf River out of economic necessity. Accidents often occur due to landmines planted there.

Liyakat Hossain, a camp leader from Camp-19, said Yunus was fishing on Wednesday morning when he was caught in the blast, severing his right ankle.

Ukhia (64) Battalion Commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam, said news has been received of a Rohingya being injured in a landmine explosion inside Myanmar.

He said security measures are in place in the border area, but some Rohingya manage to cross the border stealthily.
