Rokeya university student dies during quota reform protest
A student at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur was killed during a clash between police and protesters demanding quota reform on Tuesday. The death was confirmed by Rangpur Medical College Hospital authorities.
The deceased has been identified as Abu Sayeed, 22. He was a student of the English department of the university.
According to witnesses, students from Begum Rokeya University who were protesting for quota reform marched towards the campus from the Lalbagh area of the city. They were stopped by the police when they tried to enter the campus, leading to a clash. During the confrontation, the police fired rubber bullets at the students, resulting in the death of one student.
Md Nahiduzzaman Nahid, a student from the 2018-19 academic year in the economics department, said, "When the police came across a student during a chase, they beat him and fired several rounds."
Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Md Moniruzzaman said, "I have heard that one person has died, but I cannot specify how."
